The Radiation Cat project was a government funded research project in which house cats were genetically engineered to change colors when around radioactive areas.  The purpose for this experiment was to produce a warning device that could be used to warn people of nuclear waste for thousands of years to come.  Cats were chosen, in part, because they could live and breed in these areas forever, long after the English language was dead and gone.
